In the fourth quarter of 2013, The Coleman Foundation approved three grants totaling $625,000 which advance strategies articulated in the Foundation's Developmental Disabilities Impact Plan.
A $150,000 grant to Easter Seals Joliet Region (Joliet, IL) will provide renovations and upgrades to six community homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. Improvements include replacement of aging flooring, replacement of windows, remodeling of bathrooms and replacing or resealing driveways. Additionally, funds are awarded as partial support for purchasing a new residential home which will replace an existing property. This award will allow the organization to improve residential environments which are home to 48 individuals.
A $250,000 grant to Gigi's Playhouse (Hoffman Estates, IL) will support the launch of the organization's National Achievement Center and its Hugs & Mugs career training program. The award partially funds build-out of training classrooms and a retail storefront in which program participants will design, print and sell products. The grant also includes funds for program operating expenses. This award will enable the organization to expand and increase employment opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome.
A $225,000 grant to Park Lawn Association (Oak Lawn, IL) will provide capital improvements to multiple residential and programmatic facilities in order to maintain the safety of residents as well as the efficiency and quality of services delivered by the organization. Projects include repairs to the roof and parking lots of program and residential facilities, as well as replacement of windows, installation of cabinetry, remodeling of a bathroom and replacement of floor coverings in community homes. The projects will improve residences which are home to more than 40 individuals and program spaces that serve more than 180.
