On December 1, 2015, forty-seven nonprofit organizations will participate in the Foundation's #ILGive for Giving Tuesday Matching Grants Program. This marks the third consecutive year in which matching grants will be made available to organizations that have accepted the challenge to increase their capacity to raise funds from individual contributors using online methods, particularly through social media channels. This year’s matching grant specifically targets incremental increases in gifts from individuals.
As estimated in the Giving USA 2015 Report, gifts from individual donors comprised 72% of total 2014 charitable contributions. While total giving by this segment increased by over 5% last year, it has remained in the range of 2 to 3% of household income for many years. Therefore, not only are individuals the most significant current source of charitable support for non-profit organizations but they also represent a most fertile ground for increased support in the future. The #ILGive for Giving Tuesday Matching Grants Program exists to aid participating organizations in securing this support by encouraging increased philanthropy by individuals.
The Foundation will match donations to these organizations made online on Giving Tuesday (December 1, 2015) to the degree to which the gift exceeds the donor’s largest single donation (made on or offline) in 2014, up to a set maximum to each organization. For example, if a donor made two gifts of $100 and $50 last year and makes a $175 gift online on Giving Tuesday, the Foundation will match $75 of the gift -- the difference between the gift amount ($175) and their largest gift of last year ($100). Donations received by individuals who have not previously given to the organization will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
The Program supports the involvement of participating organizations in #ILGive which is a statewide, non-partisan, multi-year initiative led by Forefront, a statewide membership association for nonprofits, philanthropy, public agencies, advisors, and others. Last year's #ILGive campaign resulted in nearly $4 million in donations to nonprofit organization across the state and this year's goal is $6 million.
